Wormy Acres Farm is ¼-acre site located in Atascadero, CA which practices “Veganic” gardening. This means that the garden is cultivated without the use of synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, genetically-modified plants, and/or animal byproducts; so is essentially void of any external inputs except for sunlight, water, and human energy (exceptions: we use horse manure because it’s everywhere and fire up Grandpa’s old roto-tiller every now and then).
Native plants are cultivated around the garden in an attempt to offset habitat loss and support biodiversity, organic material is composted on-site, green manure cover crops are tilled back into the soil, a diverse range of veggies, grains, and herbs are rotated constantly, and everything is done by hand to not only ensure maximum benefits to soil health and tilth, but also in an effort to produce garden-fresh quality produce using as little energy as possible. Freshly-harvested produce is even delivered throughout the county by bicycle and can currently be found at the Range in Santa Margarita as well as Vraja’s Kitchen and the Natural Foods Co-op in San Luis Obispo..
The garden began as a senior project in Sustainable Agriculture at Cal Poly, follow us here as we see where it goes!
